There’s always a small thrill in receiving a free tote bag or water bottle; free items feel exciting, and doubly so when they’re sustainable too. But as these well-intentioned symbols of eco-friendly behaviour multiply, and you find yourself stuffing a tenth unused water bottle into an abandoned cupboard at home, we risk ending up back where we started: consuming more stuff in the name of consuming less.
