This week, two very different – but equally exciting – stories caught our eye, showing what’s possible when innovation meets ambitious action on the road to net zero.
At Kew Gardens, the iconic, but very energy inefficient Palm House will close for 5 years to undergo a major retrofit to replace every pane of its single-glazed glass to help the Gardens meet their net zero targets. Part of a clear and ambitious plan to make the entire site net zero, the scale of change taking place is striking. But it also shows that major changes are possible when sustainability becomes a priority, even in the most delicate of settings.
Meanwhile, over in the world of breakfast cereals, Weetabix has halved carbon emissions on trial farms by reducing nitrogen fertiliser use, proving that shifts in farming practices to achieve significant carbon reductions are possible.
Reaching net zero demands bold solutions, but as these stories show, with the right intent and some ambition, progress is more than possible.
