SBTi survey

7 November, 2025

The Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) is the company behind “Corporate Net Zero”, a science-based targets framework which aims to align corporate action with the Paris Agreements 1.5C limit.  It is seen as the “gold-standard” within climate science, but in some corners of the business world there has been scepticism of the “business case” for it.

The SBTi have recently published research on this, demonstrating that having an SBT is linked to greater competitive advantage. Key stats include the fact that 95% said it was beneficial reputationally, 80% said it improved strategic cohesion and long-term vision and 76% said it boosted investor confidence. The research is based on direct insights from companies in the SBTi ecosystem, alongside academic research and case studies, and while the fact that it is authored by the SBTi could lead some to question its conclusions, the insights are broadly consistent with other research.

Questions into – and insight around – how sustainability builds business resilience are always interesting and important to us, our peers and our clients. To dig into this, we co-run a Sustainability Leaders Panel, which comprises both a biannual survey and event, with Mishcon de Reya and Echo Research. The idea is to provide the opportunity for businesses to discuss what’s working and what’s not, to help accelerate progress in Sustainability. This month the Panel will explore how to turn strategy into action. If you would like a copy of the report, or to be involved in the next Panel, let us know! We’d love to hear from you.
