The Dad Shift

27 September, 2024

The UK government has a long way to go in shifting the fundamentals of our childcare system to be fairer and more supportive of parents. In July, we highlighted the challenges of parental leave and now a recent campaign draws attention to the challenge.

The Dad Shift recently gained attention by attaching life-size baby models to statues of famous men across the UK, aiming to raise awareness about our inadequate paternity leave policy. Currently, the UK offers the shortest statutory paternity leave in Europe – equivalent to just two days of full pay (£184 a week). As a result, one in three fathers take no leave when their baby arrives, and half of those who do face financial struggles.

The Dad Shift is urging the government to support a more modern and equitable paternity leave policy, advocating for an allowance that’s both affordable and fair, promoting equality among parents. Research shows that countries offering six or more weeks of paternity leave have a smaller gender pay gap and a higher rate of workforce participation, demonstrating that better parental leave isn’t just good for families – it’s good for the economy and society too.

It’s a shift that’s long overdue, and you can show your support by signing the open letter here
