Nature finds common ground
16 October, 2026
This week, TNFD, SBTN and the Nature Positive Initiative announced major updates that bring their approaches to corporate action on nature much closer together. It is an important step towards making the different frameworks businesses use to understand, act on and measure their relationship with nature work better together.
Until now, businesses have had to navigate different approaches for assessing their impacts and dependencies on nature, setting targets, taking action and measuring progress. Companies can now build on the same data and analysis as they move through the process, rather than treating each framework as a separate exercise, making credible action on nature more straightforward, and making it easier to make the case internally.
The updates include TNFD’s LEAP 2.0 approach and SBTN’s Science-Based Targets for Nature 2.0, with organisations able to reuse relevant data, analysis and outputs between the two standards. LEAP 2.0 also strengthens guidance in several areas, including measuring the state of nature, assessing nature-related risks and opportunities, considering environmental crime, assessing financial institutions’ portfolios and linking nature more closely to transition planning. The Nature Positive Initiative has also introduced its new State of Nature Indicators and Metrics which provides a common measurement foundation that can be embedded across different frameworks and standards.
This comes just as CBD COP17 in Yerevan, Armenia, is set to put the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework back in focus. TNFD has also announced that it will contribute to the development of an ISO standard based on LEAP 2.0, helping to put the approach on a more established, long-term footing. For us, these developments are an encouraging sign that the nature space is maturing. We’re excited to see where it leads, and our climate and nature team is ready to help clients understand what the changes mean for them and put them into action.
