We worked with the food delivery platform to create an inspiring and transformative partnership focused on reducing waste reduction in high-profile settings
The challenge
Just Eat was looking for ways to engage restaurant partners in addressing single-use packaging.
While it does not have direct control over packaging choices, it is able to encourage and incentivise restaurants through the provision of branded packaging available in its online shop and through communications and marketing campaigns.
Our approach
- Worked with Just Eat to understand existing data on packaging choices, and where single-use plastic was particularly prevalent in restaurant settings with few alternatives.
- Reviewed the landscape to understand sustainable choices available for plastic-lined takeaway containers.
- Introduced Just Eat to Notpla, an Earthshot Prize-winning UK start-up developing seaweed-based plastics alternatives that are fully recyclable or compostable.
Outputs and impact
- Small-scale trial in three London restaurants which prevented over3,000 plastic-lined boxes from being thrown away.
- Biodegradable containers are now available in Just Eat’s online stores in the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Poland, Ireland, and Austria.
- The packaging was also used at the UEFA Champion’s League Women’s Finals – stadium food was served in Just Eat branded containers lined with Notpla’s seaweed coating.
