Essential Recognition
15 October, 2020
It’s always heartening to see great people getting the credit they deserve.
So we were thrilled last week to see Laura Winningham, Founder and CEO of City Harvest London and friend of Good Business, awarded an OBE for service to the community in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
We’ve written before about City Harvest, an amazing charity that redistributes surplus food to Londoners who would otherwise go hungry. When the pandemic hit, the team sprang into action. Whilst the rest of us were staying at home, City Harvest’s green vans took to the streets to deliver an astounding four million meals to those in food poverty.
Laura was one of 400 ‘unsung heroes’ of the pandemic to be honoured on the List, with others including a 100-year-old man who raised over £400,000 for Covid-19 relief by doing laps of his garden, whilst fasting during Ramadan, and a 16-year-old boy who used his 3D printer to create Personal Protective Equipment.
The coming months are likely to see even more people experiencing food poverty – making the work of City Harvest yet more essential. We’re glad, at least, that their extraordinary work is not going unseen.
