The Goods: Paw-some pet food
7 October, 2022
While some people may be squeamish about eating insects, their pets certainly aren’t. Environmentally-minded pet owners are choosing to feed their animals food made from mealworms instead of traditional pet food in an effort to reduce carbon emissions associated with raising livestock for traditional, meat-based diets.
And this week’s Goods is British pet food brand, Yora which claims to be “the world’s most sustainable dog food” made from oats, potato, kale, seaweed, chicory and insects.
It is estimated that pets consume 20% of meat and fish globally. Choosing insect food to feed your furry friends has a significantly lower impact on the planet. Pet foods made from insect meal use just a fraction of the land and water resources than those containing chicken or beef. Insects need just 2% of the land and 4% of the water to produce each kilogram of protein, which means they generate 96% less carbon emissions than farmed meat or fish.
Not only is it good for the environment but insects are also rich in protein and when farmed, species can contain high fats, oils, mineral and vitamin levels. Yora is hypoallergenic, and free from antibiotics and growth hormones. Most importantly for pet owners, dogs and cats love the taste!
