Look up from your laptop

What if one of the most effective workplace wellbeing tools isn’t an app, a platform or a policy? What if it’s the tree outside your office window?
Between Teams calls, packed calendars and the daily scramble to clear our inboxes, it’s easy to move from one task to the next without noticing the natural world around us. Yet growing evidence suggests that even small moments of connection with nature can have a meaningful impact on wellbeing, helping to reduce stress, improve mood and support better mental health.
That’s the thinking behind the Nature and Wellbeing Calendar launched by RSPB Cymru and Healthy Working Wales. Designed with input from employers across Wales, the free, year-round resource encourages people to reconnect with nature through simple activities that slot easily into everyday working life. Think listening to birdsong on your morning coffee break, taking a mindful lunchtime stroll noticing the changing seasons, or simply spending a moment looking out of the window.
What feels particularly powerful about the calendar is its recognition that nature doesn’t have to be remote or extraordinary to be meaningful. Conversations about nature can often conjure images of national parks, dramatic coastlines or protected habitats. But for most people, the nature they encounter every day is much closer to home, or the office.
Importantly, the activities recommended in the calendar require no specialist skills, expensive equipment or access to vast green spaces, making them just as relevant for office workers in big cities as they are for people in more rural settings. The calendar also includes links to additional resources, free nature identification apps and practical ideas for helping nature.
So, at a time when many businesses are developing nature strategies and starting to understand their impacts and dependencies on the natural world, employee engagement can be a missing piece of the puzzle. The Nature and Wellbeing Calendar offers a practical way to bridge that gap, helping people experience nature in their everyday lives while supporting wellbeing at work.
