A Good Investment

We’re always keen to highlight the positive impact and central role sustainable finance has in tackling the climate crisis. Even at an individual level you can have a huge impact, whether that’s switching to a green pension provider or keeping a look out for investment portfolios that score highly against Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) metrics.
Ethex is a new service that allows you to use your money to directly fund social transformation or environmental projects in the UK. The not-for-profit platform lists a range of investment opportunities from grassroots community organisations and social enterprises.
Levels of minimum investment vary across projects but some start at as little as £30. This makes it relatively accessible to chip in, to not only support, but also gain returns on something you really believe in. That said, there is some risk involved as investments are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) and returns are not guaranteed.
Current opportunities range from community renewable energy and affordable housing projects to bringing a local independent cinema into community ownership. Past calls for funding have helped raise £650,000 for a sustainable community owned farm in Manchester and £2.57M overall for Solar For Schools.
Like it or not, money talks, and when it comes to promoting ethical and sustainable ways of living, it speaks volumes. The type of small scale, direct investment into people powered projects and social enterprise offered by platforms like Ethex is just another way you can help make your money do good.
