Tree-mendous ideas

16 December, 2021

This week, Friday 5 is getting festive! If you’re wondering how you can make this year’s gift giving a little greener, we’re here to provide some inspiration.

We love @trashplastic ‘s The Tree of Better Gifting as a handy reminder to first consider some kinder, greener options before you buy something brand new from one of the big retailers

The tree works almost like a food pyramid… but for picking presents.

Good: Independent shops – It’s been a tough couple of years for small businesses so why not buy your gift from an independent retailer, preferably from your local high street.

Very Good: Sustainable and ethical products – Hopefully you’ll already have tonnes of inspiration for this from our ‘The Goods’ section each week but see below for a few more ideas…

Very Very Good: Homemade – If arts and crafts aren’t really your thing, a quick google search throws up loads of ideas for edible gifts that look much more complicated and impressive than they are to make. Whip up some chilli oil, spiced rum or miso caramels, stick on a festive bow and enjoy the extra kudos that a homemade gift brings.

Even Better: Vintage and Preloved– Buying second hand will make a unique gift which can help you save money and the planet at the same time. If you received something last year that wasn’t quite to your taste, you could also try regifting.

Best: Experiences – The best gift is no THING at all, particularly when giving a gift to someone who really does have everything. Tickets, courses, memberships, charitable donations or something you can do together (a bit of delayed gratification can’t hurt!).
